I think you will agree that absent America, it would likely have taken a long long time.

That’s the issue under discussion. We will never know the answer, of course, but the question is worth asking. We have to wonder, also, whether America’s example of prosperity was more potent than any specific action that America took toward the Soviet Union. I don’t think it’s any accident that popular discontent in the Soviet Union rose as technology made the American lifestyle harder to conceal from the Soviet masses.

In the war against totalitarianism, MTV may ultimately be a more potent weapon than the cruise missile.

My objection is, as much as anything, to the reduction of history to black/white, hero/antihero simplicities. Those make for wonderful epitaphs, but people have a way of trying to impose them on current problems, which just reinforces the rigid sectarian polarization we are seeing in American politics today.

It doesn’t help.
