No the "barrels" are barrels of syncrude. I am sure that there is a huge amount of asphalt that comes out of the project, but actually asphalt is a byproduct of refining of most crude oil. Syncrude is a very high quality product, free from sulphur, and syncrude commands a higher price than standard WTI. A large fraction of all the oil now used in canada comes from this process.
