HOUSE PASSES BILL LIMITING HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE
Find out how your representatives voted
Dear j,
There are three different pieces of Federal legislation mentioned in this letter. The Marriage Protection Act (MPA) passed Thursday, July 22, by the House. The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) passed into law in 1996. The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) which comes up for a vote in the House in September. On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 233-194 in favor of the Marriage Protection Act (MPA) which would take away from activist federal judges the power to declare the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional. DOMA says that no state has to accept another state’s marriage laws which legalize homosexual marriage. DOMA was passed overwhelmingly in 1996 by both the House and Senate and signed into law by then President Bill Clinton. While it did not explicitly say so, both those for and those against Thursday’s MPA saw it as a test vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment which defines marriage only between a man and a woman. I mention that so that you will not be confused by all the rhetoric you may get from Representatives who voted against MPA on Thursday explaining their vote.
In September, the House will vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment. Those who voted for MPA on Thursday were voting against homosexual marriage. Those who voted against MPA were voting for homosexual marriage.
Your Representative needs to hear from you. Enter your zipcode in the box provided to see how they voted. Thank those who voted for the MPA on Thursday and ask those who voted against it to vote for the FMA in September.
Time is drawing short and we need to be active in this battle. Those pushing homosexual marriage are bombarding Congress with emails and phone calls demanding that homosexual marriage be legalized in all 50 states.
