I didn't mean to say that you couldn't physically take any other painkillers, or that painkillers wouldn't work.

What I'm saying is that once addicted to any drug, the brain is predisposed toward addiction of all drugs of abuse. That is why recovering drug addicts generally don't take any painkillers of any kind unless absolutely necessary, and why they also usually don't drink alcohol.

Methadone is a great example. It is just a trade off of one addiction for another.
