I disagree with your statement that Solaris requires Sparc hardware to be practical. NCR clearly doesn't think so.

I frankly don't know whether NT has more software titles available than Solaris X86; I suspect the answer to that question is less important in many instances than whether the particular software needed to do a job is available. I do know for certain, though, that Netscape is available for Solaris X86, although it is categorized as an "unsupported" version. I also know that many Win 95 titles will not run on NT, despite (as I recall) Microsoft's claims that they would need to in order to display the Win 95 logo. I think part of motivation behind the Java push is an effort to get more software available on Solaris.

Even if you only need a five user license, I think Solaris is now competitive. As I understand things, NT's price has been rising, and Solaris' falling.
