what are those techniques?

is it that phantom stock can only be created within a firm - i.e. when a some one buys 1000 shares of company x, the broker creates an entry showing the buyer to "own" the stock without actually completing the transaction in the market? in other words, the phantom shorter has an obligation to deliver the stock in the future, but can defer it until our buyer actually sells?

i'm confused.
