David--

You forgot number

4. They are lying. The stock, or the market, has tanked, and they wish to appear more prescient, intelligent, and successful than their threadmates. And so they claim to have shorted just before whatever it was began its precipitous decline. How often has one seen posts claiming that the author has shorted vast quantities of a bulletin board stock, for example? Ooops, can't be done. I've also read tales of huge, really huge positions in index puts; one assumes that our savvy speculator is either very, very rich or doesn't realize how high the premiums are.

Number 4, is, of course, the only risk-free way to short.
