Actually the Hummer that everybody is buying now is not the Humvee that people were buying then. The Hummer is based on an SUV chassis, I believe the Chevy Suburban. The shell on top of the chasis resembles the Humvee, but there is little other relationship. Basically people are paying $55,000 for a fancy Suburban.
