Hi Zakrosian, Shadowman and any lurkers. The more I learn about jazz, the more I appreciate it.

"Standing In the Shadows of Motown" documentary gave examples of the importance of jazz improvisations at the local clubs when the studio musicians (aka the Funk Brothers) were looking for a new hook or rhythm or whatever to get a special sound. Often the musicians would insert something they discovered the night before just jamming in the clubs. Then everyone including the "producers" would say "Yeah-yeah, that's it!"

I was goofing around on the Internet and came across a link to an exercise for learning control over ghost notes on the drums. I followed the link and discovered this simple exercise with the instructions "to make good sounding combinations."

My hand drumming combinations sounded awful at first. I thought about what I would have to do to make it sound good. After a little experimenting, I started getting the hang of it and into a groove that actually sounded good. I was ready to jam.

The idea of these guys having a wordless conversation in nothing but musical creativity really hits home. It is like a language I do not speak but I am beginning to understand bits and pieces of it.

I can only begin to appreciate the genius in a lot of jazz that I never understood before; however, the more effort I put into understanding it the more rewards I get out of listening to it. Maybe Jazz should be offered as a high school language alternative to Latin or French.
