Unfortunately, they multiply at a much faster rate than the rate we are killing them. And the cost of every one of our kills is so astronomical that there is no way we can sustain this in the long term if we continue the fight largely alone. The war on terror as we are currently fighting it in Iraq is a losing long term proposition for us.

Bret Stephens of the Jpost calls this the "Are terrorists ants?" misconception. Many factors go into the strenghth of a political movement, and strength of grievances is just one of them. Belief in the ideology, other available options (most of the Arab world has few or none) and perceptions of the movement's being a winner are also factors. Poll after poll says that the Iraqis want a secular government; why do you think that marketplace explosions like today's are going to win AQ hearts and minds in Iraq?
