I take your point, but what each would do is still largely a function of what is feasible and their options will be so severely limited that they couldn't come out too far apart.

You interpret the similarities of their positions differently that I do. I think that, when the hype of the primaries were over and Kerry had to come up with something coherent, he came up with the sensible thing. And when Bush come to recognize reality he backed into the sensible thing, too. And they ended up in about the only place they could be. It matters only slightly which of them is at the help as it is implemented. Bush would have a more aggressive and starker 'tude. Kerry would have a more collaborative and nuanced 'tude. Troops will be doing the same thing either way.

[FWIW, I notice how much stock people here put in what folks say they want to do be it political platforms or terrorist threats. Motive is only part of the game. The other parts of means and opportunity. Talk is cheap.]
