Ray,
<<I heard some RaDiCAL dUdE via Real Audio at Supercom and he wants his "ANSI compliant ADSL NOW". >>
That was me who yelled that. :-) The old version has gotten a little stale, so I've been trying to get back on the road with my unplugged versions. I have a disk with 5 versions of "I DON'T GOT MY DMT"...thats coming out soon. The lyrics are about a lonely boy who craves high bandwidth so much, that he packs up his bags and wanders off to somewhere in China searching for a philosophy that will hold him together. He only makes it as far as Canada though, and he ends up staying there, high on line...oops, I mean high on life. :-)
I tried to meet Pat at ISPCON and I got totally lost in all the activities. It was, at Pat says, pretty cool. I talked to a few companies. I talked with one of the largest ISPs, PSINet. The lady i spoke with said they didn't have any trials for ADSL (why are they so different than the telco's...I think they should have trials, no?). I also hung out at the Nortel booth for awhile and it was really interesting. They were showing the Westell FlexCap in a little demo and it worked pretty well. This was the first time I had seen an actual demo of ADSL and I was still blown away! The guy showed me two things A connection to a Web site with AVI's and then a connection to a server that might host stored films (a la a newer Blockbuster). The picture came in at ~3Mbps, he told me and it was a little skittish (he blammed it on the processor and I told him I thought the processor was plenty fast and then he said it was the MPEG software or card, which actually makes sense), but it did look pretty impressive, nonetheless. He showed that famous Nike Soccer match commercial where the European guys play some efreetis and devils. I watched it over and over and over again. It is a great ad. He had me pick up a phone that was connected to the same copper line and there sure enough was a dial tone. I immediately knew what it must have been like for people like Pat and Jim to have seen demos last year. It gets one pretty excited!!!!!
When I told him I was an investor and I had some WSTL, he said that he hoped I wouldn't be disappointed. I told him it didnt matter, "I'm hedged." :-)
Well, the fellow didn't know anything about trials or what not, but when I told him about how I look forward to having only one line (I have two now), he said, "No! Don't get rid of that other line...we are working on something that will be of good use for it" and he winked at me. I pressed for more, but he said he couldn't tell me. I've been trying to fill the hole since.
Still wanting to see Amati in a demo, but generally happy about Westell's demo at Nortel's booth.
Can't wait for these high speed services...like everyone here!
