Actually, come to think of it, I've seen the claim as "The Canadians repelled that last American invasion" which is correct if you call the people in Canada at that time Canadians rather than British colonists.

It can equally truly be claimed that the Americans repelled the last Canadian invasion, so each country won the last battle on its soil.

Fortunately, the countries have learned to get along pretty well since then.
