BOSTON - Of the handful of states that should be slam dunks for John Kerry in November, New Jersey is one. Not so fast, cautions a survey that took both parties by surprise. The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll, released yesterday, shows President Bush trailing Kerry by only 2 percentage points in what had been a swing state that moved sharply into the Democratic column in one decade.
