My dad was drafted for Korea, and does not confirm the basic training abuses you describe. He did not serve in Korea, so can't comment on the allegation that Korean civilians were mistreated.

unclewest's reports suggest to me that Special Forces and Green Berets selection of elite men tends to weed out the psychopaths, one more reason to support volunteer military.

I've represented many a psychopath and sociopath when I was taking court appointed criminal cases. Never did I extrapolate from them to the rest of mankind. Some people are vicious opportunists, some have weak characters and can be led into wrongdoing, but most are strong enough to not feel temptation.
