I'm thinking many Republicans are seeing this as a chance to wrest control of their party back from the social conservatives, the anti-abortion, Christian fundamentalists, anti-gay rights people. They began using these peoples votes during Reagan's time, but now they seem to have taken control. I think a lot of Republicans wonder just what is important to their party at the current time. It doesn't seem to be fiscal conservatism, small government and only unavoidable foreign entanglements anymore.
