<<<Do you find it problematic when those with greater intelligence and capacity for hard work are more successful than others?>>>

The trouble with discussions like this is that it is mostly a matter of degree. I can't give examples that are mathematically accurate.

The example of John Edwards making it to the top is like 1 in 100 million as a opposed to George Bush making it to the top is perhaps more like 1 in 10,000. We are not talking about leveling the playing field for those people. They can take care of themselves.

Most of us do not fall into that category. Many of us fall into a category where there is a tremendous disparity of opportunities that we had nothing to do with.

We are not asking that we completely level the playing field. We are asking that we share in the wealth of this nation by minimizing the most egregious disparities.

I don't think anyone is saying not to do anything. The question is, "how much is enough?".

<<<do you really think that this country does not offer people a shot at a livable wage? If you do, we must live in two different countries.>>>

It is pretty easy to look down on people who can't find a decent job. Nobody owes them a living. They would have to depend on the largess of charitable people.

But, we are a rich nation. A lot of intelligent people worked hard to make this a terrific country. Don't ask what this country can do for you, but what can you do for your country?

One of the things that we can do for this country (for those that are fortunate enough to capitalize on what this country offers) is to share the burden of those who can't (for whatever reason) help themselves and lift them up so they are no longer a burden to the rest of us.

We are a rich nation. We can do some things that poorer nations can not do. We can look after each other.

The real debate is how much are we obligated to do as a community - it is not to do nothing.
