I absolutely hate this "two America" theme. It's good, old fashioned American populism, going back to William Jennings Bryan. It works real well with the base. Populists claimed that "vicious" legislation had allowed exploiters to rob farmers and other workers of the value of their labor. This had led to manifold economic, political, and social problems, including the decline of agriculture after the Civil War. In the early 1890s members of the Southern Farmers' Alliance, and several like-minded organizations, signified their frustration with lobbying for relief by founding the People's party. This committed them to replacing the political elite with true representatives of the people and enacting legislation to take control of government policy away from the "interests." history.smsu.edu
