I have not read the Tuchman book, perhaps I will take a look.

I consider it possible that Johnson could not stand being the first president to lose a war, if that were the appropriate characterization. But I consider that a motive "at the margins". It does not, for example, explain why most Congressmen supported the war at the time, or why Americanization of the war was practically unopposed, when Kennedy had been careful to limit our commitment of troops.
