I bet that there were monthly payments due. I started to do the same thing myself a year or so ago and realized I would have to remember to write a check every month. Of course you could borrow the money back.

I guess if you want to keep up with it all you can clear a few hundred dollars, but after losing the tax deduction for that part of the mortgage and after paying income taxes on interest received, it's not very high pay.
