It seems to me that the crux of the matter is not the first half of that sentence but the second. As for the first half, no doubt the terrorists are true-believers. They're absolutist fanatics. They're evil, even. That's a given. What is not a given is to what extent or how long the crowd will follow, or not. To the extent that the crowd follows like the Nazis followed Hitler, we have one scenario. To the extent that the crowd hunkers down and rides it out like the Soviets, we have another scenario.

Clearly, to me, anyone as nuts as Hitler or these terrorists should be disposed of. They're rotten and you can't fix them so they have to be removed from the barrel. As for the followers, if you take the long view, as do the fanatics, I don't see why time cannot be on our side as easily or more easily than on theirs. What the terrorists advocate offers the people nothing. I have trouble believing that they are all nuts or stupid. They will figure it out in their own time and in their own way. With a little help from their friends. And the whole jihad thing will run out of steam. It could happen that way. Or not.
