Like many, I go through a lot of metal detectors these days -- every trip to a courthouse, every trip to a government building, especially in DC -- one of the things I've been noticing are black boxes with colored lights on it that the guards glance at before I put my bags on the conveyor belt and go through the metal detectors.

I've been wondering if it's a radiation detector, or a "sniffer", or just part of the metal detector or what. Any ideas?

I even go through a metal detector and show photo ID at DAR Constitution Hall, where I use the genealogy library. It's a private building but only a block or so from the White House. I think I've noticed one of those funny boxes there, as well as the National Gallery, only a couple of blocks from the Capitol, but there they don't put you through a metal detector, they just search your bags.
