If these are the targets, it would seem that AQ has a grave problem with the international monetary system, and wishes to destroy it.

That is what I mean by 'unassuagable grievances'. The US alone could not shut down or even radically alter the international monetary system, and sure as hell doesn't want to try. What AQ & co are after is a new Dark Ages for Europe and America. After all, Europe's original Dark Ages, back in the 7th and 8th century CE, were caused by the first, glorious days of Islam, when the conquests of Mohammed and his successors closed the Mediterranean Sea off from Europe.
