I haven't read it either (think I spotted in in New Scientist...), so I don't know what 'improved method' means. One of the authors is with Chiron vaccines. I contactes Neutec's IR, and they didn't seem too bothered, FWIW.

I'll be noodling around the Bay Area for the next week or so if you fancy a beer.
