I was thinking of the really down and out, but you are talking about the entire "entitlement" program that includes receipients of SS, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans beneifits, etc.

That's just the point. We start out trying to help the really down and out by creating entitlements for them and then the notion of entitlement grows like a cancer. Everyone wants to increase his cut and reduce his contribution. This is not a Good Thing. It is not feasible to entitle only those you're talking about without it spreading, not in our culture. Which is why I suggest you think twice about supporting entitlements for those in your population. We need to find a different way to help them.

Re your list of entitlements, I was not referring to veterans' benefits. Veterans' benefits are an earned employment compensation, not the dole. Social Security and Medicare are a hybrid.
