Al Franken Heads to Cable TV's Sundance Channel

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Liberal political humorist Al Franken, once a star of "Saturday Night Live," is headed back to television next month with plans to bring his radio show to the Sundance cable TV channel, a spokesman said on Monday.

Starting Sept. 7, Sundance will package the best of Franken's three-hour weekday radio program into a one-hour telecast of highlights that will air at 11:30 p.m. the same night, with repeats at 2:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. the next morning.

Sundance plans to keep the satirist on its network through the November U.S. presidential election, and possibly beyond, a spokesman for Franken said.

Franken got his start as a writer and performer on the early days of NBC's landmark late-night comedy sketch show "Saturday Night Live." More recently, he has found success as the author of such conservative-skewering books as "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot" and "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right."

His radio show debuted on March 31 as part of the fledgling Air America radio network, billed as a liberal antidote to the predominantly right-leaning talk-show culture whose ranks include Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly.

"The Al Franken Show." which airs on 17 stations, features a mix of political commentary, humor and interviews with an anti-Republican, pro-Democrat slant.
