<<the only choice in this election is between 'bad' and 'badder'.>>
My perception is, it's between "ho-hum" and "worst in the 20th century".
I am not political. The last time I got seriously worked up about an election was in 1979 in England. The country had slid into a deep socialist decay and it desperately needed a strong right-wing leader to pull it back to enlightened capitalism. That was the time the Beatles wrote "The Taxman" ("19 for me and one for you, And if 5% should seem too small, Be thankful I don't take it all"), referring to the 95% top income tax rate. I was 21 and am proud to have voted for Margaret Thatcher back then.
This time, the extremism runs in the opposite direction. Based on my observation since 2000, the Bush administration is likely the most extreme-right, bigoted, arrogant, and blind administration of this century. Their actions are driving the US into long-term disaster. Economically, socially (deep inequality is THE cause of revolution, ya know) and in its world standing. For the USA, this is the most important election of a lifetime. Just like 1979 was in England.
I have sent $1,000 to Kerry and $1,000 to the DNC. I will give more if the campaign seems to need it. I am not rich. Just gravely concerned. |
