China has 1/2 the worlds mobile users! Admittedly most of them probably do not have the latest generation phones, but still, that is surprising, to me at least.....

China records 305 million mobile phone users at end of June

Press release; Adam Hwang, DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 3 August 2004]

The number of mobile phone subscribers in China increased by 35 million during the first half of this year to 305 million, while that of fixed-line telephone users grew by 33 million to 295 million, according to statistics recently published by the Ministry of Information Industry.

Operators of telecommunication services in China brought in total revenues of 281.6 billion yuan during the first half of this year, rising by 13% on year, according to the China News Net. Of the half-year value, 253.6 billion yuan or 90.1% came from fixed-line and mobile phone services as well as Internet and value-added services. In the first half of this year, operators invested a total of 88.6 billion yuan in hardware infrastructure, a year-on-year hike of 12.9%.
