Hi Dave,
I'm really picky about spelling and punctuation in my literary work, but don't hold the heels of my computer postings (email and SI) to the same high level of flame. -g This is more like a phone call in terms of its casualness, IMO.
I love Glenn Yarborough's voice but have to admit that McKuen and Webb aren't my cuppa tea at this point. I'm reading so much-- the eastern Europeans like Szymborska and Milosz at the moment-- that my tastes change often.
I really like the spareness and sense of urgency of these poets, I think in part because they're responding to the sense of urgency that I'm feeling about the way the world is moving. Here's a stanza from one of Szymborska's recent poems. She won the Nobel in Literature recently, BTW:
Nothing has changed. Except for the course of boundaries, the line of forests, coasts, deserts and glaciers. Amid these landscapes traipses the soul, disappears, comes back, draws nearer, moves away, alien to itself, elusive, at times certain, at others uncertain of its own existence, while the body is and is and is and has no place of its own. |
