And thanks for the rec on Diamond's book. I haven't heard of it before..

BTW, I have contended that the Russian's almost complete disregard for their environment brought about the ending of the cold war and the disolution of their republic.. Not Reagan...They, the Russians, tried to cover up for many of their economic failures by COMPLETE exploitation of their environment. And they did for awhile... But the shear weight put on the environment couldn't hold up things for ever.. The Chernobyl disaster in 1986 was the beginning of end for them.. the HEAVY hair that broke the camel's back..

And the same could happen here :(, if we are not watchful and careful.

For the environment can not tell difference between various political systems operating upon it. It only knows when it's had enough.
