A couple of things.

First, I don't think it's out of the question that Cheney leaves the ticket. He's a bit old, and not in good health. Second, if McCain gets the nod, and is willing to serve, you can call it quits--the GOP wins hands down. Such a scenario would set up a possible McCain vs. Hillary race in '08 which would indeed be very interesting.
