It is a really sad and despicable episode, but not unique in American history. Everyone is immediately reminded of the unfair attacks on John McCain in 2000, and Cleland in 2002.

For McCain, Bush supporters conducted a "push poll" were they asked people if it would change their opinion of McCain if they discovered he had an illegitimate black child. Despicable.

For Cleland, his opponent ran ads questioning Cleland's patriotism and showed him morphing into bin Laden. That ad, like this attack on John Kerry, is beneath all American's contempt.

Unfortunately this is nothing new. JFK was attacked as a screw-up for what happened to PT-109. Teddy Roosevelt was called a fraud for his actions in Cuba. Grant was called a butcher and a drunk (Ok, drunk was probably true<g>); Jefferson a coward. And many more examples ...

JFK won. Roosevelt won. Grant won. Jefferson won.

I think Kerry will win, but I expect this campaign to get UGLY.
