the point of Putin is very simple - make the Western economies notice that he is a POWER and can influence their recovery even with no updated military power (they chose Yukos because it's close relation to Exon Mobil and their anticipated JV without the blessing of the new dictator and his gang at the Kremlin).

It is all a power play to extract various concession from pipelines from the Caspian Basin to the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea via Turkey without paying a penny to the Russian ……… to a pipeline to China instead of Japan to involvement in the reconstruction of the oil industry in Iraq and who knows what else .... so he got the Western countries at their most sensitive point ... energy .... as the whole Yukos tax issue is all political driven
