It's always possible if the price is right. I think you summarized it quite well. The only thing I can think of is IBM continues to expand their service business and perhaps with Novell's assets (land, money, and human resources), it is IBM's plan to leverage this business using Novell's core assets (the human element).

I did attend a demonstration of Novell's network management software "war room" when I attended the annual meeting. Novell can control (update, manage and administer) huge enterprise networks from such rooms located anywhere in the world. These networks involve thousands of nodes per client.

If I were in the service business, I would offer many of these large enterprise fortune 1000 companies an option to "out source" their enterprise network operations to my service company. Who else in the world would you trust with your enterprise operation....IBM...surely not Novell.

I suppose if a few of these "war rooms" were constructed around the world and linked together with a global telecommunication network (which IBM already has in place), I suppose that a pretty attractive customer service & network management "out source" revenue model could be developed. Novell's new BorderManager product and JAVA's platform independant software applications also add an interesting twist to the equation.

For any possible buy out watch both SUNW and IBM. I really do not see it happening any time soon.
