No, not in the US. You must be thinking of Britain. If you are a public figure in the US, the libel law is extremely weak. It's not enough to show the information is harmful and false and was known to be false; you basically have to prove malicious intent, which is very difficult to prove. I'm sure one of the lawyers on thread could fill in the details.
