Does AMD have a product that competes with the PENTIUM II ? Or is it the dramatic price cuts on what they are selling ?

Cowen Says Some Intel Customers Might See Early Price Cuts

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--While Intel Corp. (INTC) reiterated it won't cut prices for its Pentium II chips until November, Cowen & Co. analyst Drew Peck said some customers are expecting to start seeing price reductions in September.

Peck said the company might lower prices for selective customers, but that there wouldn't be broad-based price cuts until November. An Intel spokesman said the price cuts are scheduled to go into effect as planned in November.

Peck believes the motivation for the selective price cuts might be more competitive pressure from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) than originally expected.

Advanced Micro has reported several key contracts with major companies, including International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) earlier this week. The PC companies have agreed to use Advance Micro chips in some lines, but all use many more Intel microprocessors in their computers.

Intel controls at least 80% of the market for microprocessors, the brains of the computer, according to industry experts.

Peck reiterated his neutral rating for the company as well in his research note.
