There have been a series of "large" earthquakes in Taiwan over the past few years. There have been "large" earthquakes in northern and southern California. I think fear of "catastrophe" is not well founded. Certainly, the IC industry would recover, shortly, from temporary shutdowns caused by an earthquake.

I believe that the transfer of jobs overseas is a greater threat to the overall economy and to the US as a nation than it is to the IC industry. Fabs are located overseas because of the availability of capital, not low cost labor. A strong domestic semi equipment business helps maintain a leading US position in semi manufacturing.
