Mike,
I'm all for a true, comprehensive flat tax. Always have been. No deductions. Just a simple calculation and straightforward payment. No perceived unfairness to harp on -- if you make more, you pay more. Basically takes away the ability of government to play favorites through exceptions, tax breaks, variable rates, etc. All those are designed to hide the truth that complicated tax codes benefit few, and burden many. If you wanted to protect the relatively small proportion of truly poor among us, you could set a minimum below which nothing is taxed for anyone. (I know, that sounds like an exception, but if done right, maintains the spirit of a flat tax.) All JMHO.
Tim
