zonkie, I think you are confusing the statement of one Veteran with another...there are 13 who spoke in the ad. Elliot said he was not informed that Kerry killed a single, wounded, fleeing Viet Cong soldier by shooting him in the back.

His only comment was that he was not witness and he did believe what others had since told him. In retrospect he indicated he would have prefered to not have that line in there.

That is not the main point of his declarations though. He is saying the Kerry lied upon his return, and did not tell the truth about what happened in Vietnam.

I realize this may be hard to fit into your "was he lying then or now" construct. But that is only because its a false choice.

These veterans were effected by mis-portrayals of their actions, I am afraid they believe the truth of this matter is beyond politics. Certainly the Republicans are not overjoyed by this debate. But those soldiers will not be quieted.
