To them, it's more like a rational choice to sacrifice time in the car in exchange for an affordable, larger home.

One of the other contributing problems to the situation, which is rarely mentioned is that no one wants to live in a smaller closer-in home. They want the 4-BR/3-Bath 2 acre house right away.

There are plenty of affordable neighborhoods "closer in" but they are older homes -- 1950 - 1960 era, that most families could move into and then renovate as their families and income grow.

But no one wants to save and wait. They'd rather go insane trying to be workers and parents while losing 2 - 3 hours per day in aggrevating traffic.

And the culture and problems of the outerburb areas is a direct result of these choices.

By the way -- every morning there are "traffic reports" on radio and TV. But if you listen for about a week, you realize its really an "accident report". Every day, people who are too tired trying to pack 27 hours into a 24 hours day make a driving mistake.
