Whom should you believe, the Swift Vets, or Kerry?

The following is not in dispute: In just four months in Vietnam, Kerry won an unusual number of medals - four Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and Bronze Star.

How did Kerry win these medals? The charitable explanation is that he's a bona fide war hero.

The Swift Vets have a different explanation: Kerry fraudulently got those medals so that he could leave Vietnam early and further his political ambitions.

Consider this well-documented evidence:

1. According to a Harvard Crimson interview, Kerry asked the military to let him study for a year in Paris, rather than go to Vietnam. His request was denied.

2. According to a Kerry statement in 1986, he requested a swift boat assignment so that he would see very little action.

3. Once the swift boats were in the thick of things, Kerry got out as quickly as he could, serving fewer days than any other swift boat veteran. In fact, he put in for a transfer three days after he got the third Purple Heart that qualified him to leave Vietnam.

It's very apparent that Kerry did not want to be in combat in Vietnam. That's what makes the Swift Vets' charges that he lied to get his medals, so that he could leave Vietnam, very compelling
