HomeVestors Launches New Ad Campaign and Mascot, “Ug”

DALLAS, Texas - (April 6, 2004) - HomeVestors® of America, Inc., the company most commonly known for advertising “We Buy Ugly Houses,” has launched a new advertising campaign featuring the company’s first mascot, Ug.

Ug, a caveman who has been buying and selling real estate for a million years, and his slogan, “Ug Buys Ugly Houses,” will be featured on hundreds of billboards nationwide along with the trademark HomeVestors bright yellow background and black brushstroke font.

“We are really excited about the new creative,” said Rena Graver, director of advertising for HomeVestors. “The original slogan, ‘We Buy Ugly Houses,’ is a very noticeable, prominent and unforgettable campaign, so we didn’t want to stray too far from what works. With the introduction of Ug, we are personalizing what we do in a fun way.”

All HomeVestors advertising concepts are the brainchild of founder and CEO, Ken D’Angelo.

“Before I started selling franchises, I was buying and selling 100 houses annually as a result of the billboards I placed around Dallas,” said D’Angelo. “The volume of business I received forced me to create a system to handle, follow through and successfully complete the sale of each property. It is the same system we teach all of HomeVestors’ franchisees today.”

HomeVestors spends approximately $18 million annually on billboard advertising and some television spots, initiating roughly 70 percent of the company’s business.

“Ug is already a big hit in the markets where he has been introduced,” said Graver. “Our previous high-impact billboard campaigns quickly achieved nearly 100 percent customer awareness within months of implementation, and we expect Ug to do the same.”
