Hugh Hewitt is as excited about the Swifties as I am. His show and blog are all over it.
BREAKTHROUGH: On the Kerry-in-Cambodia story. Fox News led Special Report with a Carl Cameron story on the 1986 Kerry speech on the Senate floor. The Kerry campaign had first denied that Kerry ever placed himself in Cambodia, and then --after Carl read or showed them the Congressional Record in question-- told him they'd get back to him.
They didn't. Hmmm. Think there's some serious spin-thinking going on with Senator Kerry tonight? I had Instapundit and RogerLSimon on the radio program to speculate on whether the Fox News' story would lead to print stories. Both agreed it would take a couple of more days, but then, an hour later, O'Reilly had on a swiftboat veteran who served with Kerry denying that Kerry had ever been in Cambodia. That means hundreds of thousands of television viewers now know about this Kerry lie. I called Boston Globe editor Marin Baron today to ask him about it, and Marty said he wasn't familiar with the story, and directed me to his reporters. We called all three who worked on the Kerry bio. None called us back. One is on vacation, but two just couldn't be bothered. Since their bio repeats the Kerry-in-Cambodia lie, perhaps they aren't to eager to be interviewed on the story, or perhaps they just don't appear on talk radio.
Wait until Carl or anyone else finds the 1992 AP story that has Kerry adding more details to his lie. In this account, Kerry is dropping off a CIA man in Cambodia. Right. That's very believable. What's next: Dinner with Kurtz? What else has Kerry made up for dramatic effect? All of a sudden the swift boat critics of Kerry are no longer the story --their allegations about Kerry's untruthfulness need to be examined one-by-one as one of those allegations has proven to be true. The swift boat critics of Kerry say no swift boats went near Cambodia, to which Kerry defenders will say they didn't serve with Kerry. Which is like saying the defensive line and the special teams don't serve with the quarterback on a football team. A patrol boat skipper, now retired in Hawaii, called in to stae emphatically that his boat and boats like it patrolled near Cambodia, never the swift boats. It is a bald-faced lie, one that grew with the tellings until Kerry realized he could no longer get away with it. Then he dropped it. Spin that. Mara and Juan were peddling furiously towards the "he-thought-he-was-in-Cambodia" line, but skippers don't get 50 miles off course to begin with, and there's that pesky CIA man that Kerry invented in 1992. Kerry lied. Deal with it.
One other note: KerryHaters was first to blog on the Christmas-in-Cambodia lie, way back on May 21. Too bad the elite media hadn't cast their net widely enough. They'd have had a scoop long ago. Let's see if they compound the error by pretending not to notice in tomorrow's papers.
This website was taken down by my hosting service earlier today. It reappeared this afternoon. Perhaps my techies got it moved to a new server, or perhaps the audience complaints got to the people at www.ipowerweb.com. I am in the process of moving to a more reliable hosting service as two takedowns in two weeks is two too many. If we disappear again for a few hours, be sure to check back later. For swiftboat updates, stick with Glenn, Roger, Ed, Tom and Pat. They have it covered, even if lazy high-salaried newspaper reporters don't.
