Euros have very high gas taxes mainly because their road system cannot handle very many cars so they have to make car-owning expensive. They are also concerned about the power the Arabs have over their economies and their environment. Europe has the finest public transport in the world and you really don't need a car there at all. We have to start moving in that direction more and more, but it won't be easy.

The first thing we can do is do what Kerry-McCain's CAFE Standaads bill was trying to do, raise fuel efficiency standards. The Bushie oil cronies defeated it of course. Conservative is the easy part. Next we're going to have to incentivize clean alternative fuels and punish the gas guzzlers. We need to create a fast-growing market for clean fuels and put many bilions into research and development. If we are still stuck on Arab oil 15 years from now we have failed as a nation.
