Our #1 national security risk is addiction to Arab oil.
If not for that, there would be no Al Qaida, Saddam Hussein or Iran in terms of holding us hostage in so many ways.

This is a mandatory long-term plan which should begin now. We have already wasted too much time and the rightwing needs to stop fighting it just because the polluters and oil companies give them so much money. For instance, when Reagan came into power he scrapped Carter's huge solar program. Boy could we have used that over the years. We need to put large amounts of money in clean fuels across the country. We also have a worsening pollution problem and this new fuels program can create hundreds of thousands of good jobs. Win-win-win.

However we must also sacrifice something, the luxury of wasting energy without paying a penalty for it.
