That's an awful thing for him to have experienced, for the child to have experienced.

I know a number of vets of that era who have spent the past thirty-odd years coping with the effects of PTSD for the very reasons you brought up. To a man they've all turned to booze, drugs, sex addiction, etc. Some have since turned away from those things, but the war lives like a heavy weight on their shoulders.
