Why Some Chip Fab Projects Could Be Deferred
08.11.04, 10:48 AM ET

Standard & Poor's downgraded the outlook for the semiconductor equipment sub-industry to "neutral." S&P said "we are taking a more risk-adverse stance," citing comments from Kulicke & Soffa Industries (nasdaq: KLIC - news - people ) on "slow orders," and cautionary comments from National Semiconductor (nyse: NSM - news - people ). The research firm said, "While we think second-half 2004 and 2005 results will rise, it seems to us that macro fundamentals are weighing on chip demand." S&P said, "We would not be surprised to see some deferrals of planned chip fab construction amid rising interest rates and flattening sales." S&P said that for added clarity it awaits comment from Applied Materials (nasdaq: AMAT - news - people ), which will report third-quarter earnings on Aug. 17. S&P rates both Kulicke & Soffa and National Semiconductor at "accumulate," and rates Applied Materials at "buy."
