Seriously, people did a lot of different things in those days, things that fell somewhere on the continuum from honorable to dishonorable and the other continuum from smart to stupid. On the honor continuum, it was closer to honorable than most other common options. On the intelligence continuum, it was risky but definitely not stupid.
