The Unocal pipeline project dropped in 1998 was to be a natural gas pipeline (from Turkmenistan). And the Caspian basin has very big natural gas potential but is constrained by lack of pipelines. That remains true.

Neither this nor any of the references you listed have anything to do with the US deciding to go into Afghanistan in late 2001. That was a reaction to the 911 attack and Afghanistan's refusal to cooperate in depriving Al Qaida of a safe haven and base of operations there. Though Michael Moore and apparently many leftwing Democrats would have you believe otherwise.
