Yes, Opti appears to be moving away from low margin areas like desktop chipsets. They are concentrating on laptops and sound. They apparantly have some large design wins for their new sound chip but they have not announced this since their customers have asked them not to.

This is speculation on my part but I have been thinking about all the recent acquisitions in this area. Intel bought Chips to get their graphics know how. National bough Cyrix to get the core cpu technology. National has been pretty vocal about their strategy to combine the Cyrix core with their own perhipheral chips to build the next generation all in one chip for PCs under $500. They are trying to drive the cost of the PC down to that of consumer electronics so they can sell to a much bigger market. Based on the recent price drops in PCs, this strategy seems likely to work. This would be bad news big time for Intel. It also might mean that OPTI could be acquired by National. This is assuming that National needs sound and/or chipset technology to complete the "PC on a chip". If they need to go outside for this, OPTI is the logical choice because it is the cheapest way to buy this technology. Any thoughts along these lines?
